Birmingham City have signed Martin Jiranek from Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee, the Russian club have confirmed.
The Moscow-based club were previously believed to have offered the 31-year-old defender to the Blues, following a disagreement over contractual issues with the player.
The former Reggina man had only until December before he became a free agent, and Spartak have preferred to cash in on their former skipper by allowing him to make a move to play his trade at St Andrew's.
AEK Athens and Real Zaragoza were also thought to be interested in acquiring the services of the defender, but Birmingham have won the race to sign the versatile player — who can play as a centre-half as well as man the left-back position.
Jiranek made 165 appearances for Spartak during a six-year spell in Moscow.
Birmingham have since confirmed the player's signing on a one-year contract.
Manager Alex McLeish told the club's official website: «We are short at the back with regards to defensive cover.
“Jiranek has tremendous experience on club, European and international fronts.
”He is a good presence and his arrival will keep Roger Johnson and Scott Dann on their toes.»
