Valery Karpin: I’m going to study in Russia

Valery Karpin: I’m going to study in Russia

Spartak Moscow general director and head coach Valery Karpin commented on his obtaining PRO license.

— Congratulations Valery! Spartak have gone on vacation with the third place in Russian Championship. When you became a coach hardly anyone put much trust in you.

— Too early for congratulations. On what then? Nothing’s done yet. Serious things are still ahead… And who staked me or not isn’t important now.

— Did you expect that your words about studying at the coaching school would be scrutinized and rumored? Some specialists say your words were “a grave mistake”, others insist “you have brought harm to Russian football”.

— Naturally I didn’t expect it and more than that didn’t want to hurt anyone. I want to say I respect all coaches: those who passed the courses and those who study there.
At the same time my words weren’t interpretated in the right way; finally my words were distorted. You’ll understand it if you listen the original interview. I didn’t say “I don’t know what special things I learnt before the coaching courses will teach me”. I just asked a rhetorical question “what things the courses teach at all?”. And I really don’t know what things they teach as I don’t study there. But I understand one hundred per cent the courses give right things. I perfectly understand they are necessary and coaches need them. But if you want to enter them you should graduate from a special institute. Which I did in my time. Well, while I studied there I also took classes in biochemistry, biomechanics, sport management basics. As far as I understand the coaching courses give a deep knowledge of all these sciences.

— You said you were going to take some courses for coaches to obtain the PRO license. Have you decided where to take them: in Russia or in Spain?

— I still want to take them in Russia as I live and work here.

— Have you thought of in what aspects as a coach you succeeded?

— No. every time I learn something new. I learn something different when we win and when we lose matches. Preparation for each match, every rival is a new valueless experience.

— What can you say about the Association of Russian football coaches?

— Very positively. I’m happy such an organization exists. It protects home specialists and makes a lot for their development. I just wish it a further success and I hope to join it after I get the license.
